  • Birth*: Abraham was born on 12 January 1732/33, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.2
  • He was the son of Elisha Holly Jr. and Rebecca Bishop.
  • Marriage*: Abraham married Mary Webb, daughter of John Webb and Mary Holmes, on 12 January 1758.3
  • Residence*: As early as in 1765 Abraham Holly lived at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, based on a land record regarding the sale of a right of way to the town for construction of a highway to the Stanwich Meeting House.
  • (Witness) Probate Record: Abraham Holly was listed in the probate record of Silas Holly on 6 July 1771 at Stamford Probate Court, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. See Silas Holly for details.4
  • (Witness) Probate Record: Abraham Holly was listed in the probate record of Lois Todd on 12 May 1772 at Stamford Probate Court, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. See Lois Todd for details.4
  • Census*: Abraham appeared on the census of 1790 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, as 2 males over 16 (Elnathan & ?), 1 male under 16 (Jared), 5 females (wife Mary, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, Abby, Chloe). Neighbors Billy Scofield, Stephen Holly (2/3/3) (son), Stephen Holly Jr. (1/1/3)(nephew), Jonathan, Jesse, Joseph & Noah Waring, Jocob & William White, Ebenezer, Nathaniel & Benjamin Webb.5
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 25 May 1796, Abraham was affiliated with Stanwich Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut,"Record of such as were found in Covenant and Full Communion when Platt Buffett commenced his pastorship over the Church in Stanwich:" and on the first page, "Abraham Holly, and wife of Abraham Holly." They are both marked with # after their names, meaning "Those marked thus # died in good standing in the church."6
  • Census: Abraham appeared on the census of 1800 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as one male 10-15 years (?), one male 16-25 (possibly Jared, who did not marry until 1802 and would be 25 here), one male 45 and up (Abraham, Sr., age 67). Two females ages 16-25 (Abby and Chloe) and two females 45 and up: Mary Webb and ?7
  • Census: Abraham appeared on the census of 1810 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as as 1 male 10-15 years old, 2 males 16 - 25, and 2 males 45 and up. One female age 10-15, one female 16-25, and 2 females 45 and up. I don't know who the male 10-15 is, although Abraham could have had another son, say, 1795, and there is an Abraham of that age in Montgomery and Greene Counties I should investigate. The males 16-25 could be Alanson (age 21) and David a few years younger. David married about 1811. The two older males could be Abraham Sr and Jr., ages 77 and 52. Don't know who the female 10-15 is, could there be another sister after Sarah? Female 16-25 could be Sarah, although she was born in 1783 and would have been 27. However, there is some evidence that she was unmarried in 1831, so she could have been living at home, and two years off is not uncommon. The two older women would be Mary Webb Holly, age 70, and probably Bethia Ambler Holly, age 53. Living next door is Jas. Holly, Abraham, Jr's oldest son. Living near them are the familiar Hunting Ridge family and neighbors, Billy Scofield, John Ingersoll, John Sherwood, Joel Waring, the Todds, etc.8
  • Will*: Abraham left a will on 15 November 1815 at Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, I, Abraham Holly of Stamford in Fairfield County & State of Connecticut being now of a sound disposing mind and memory do make this my last will & testament as follows, I give unto my daughters Mary Rebecca & Lucy five hundred & twenty five dollars to be divided among them. Item. I give unto my daughter Chloe one hundred dollars. Item. I give unto the children of my daughter Elizabeth one hundred seventy five dollars to be equally divided amongst them, Item. the residue & remainder of all my real & personal estate to be divided among my children as follows, my sons to have two parts & my daughters one part, that is my daughters to have one half as much as my sons & to be divided among them accordingly. And I do hereby revoke all & every other will but this & constitute & appoint Jared Holly my son as executor in this my last will & testament, in witness whereof I have unto set my hand & seal this 15 day of Nov'r A 1815. Pronounced and declared to be his last will and testament in presence of Sarah Scofield, Ann Scofield, Reuben Scofield. ABRAHAM HOLLY

Fairfield County SS. Stamford Nov'r 15th 1815, personally appeared Sarah Scofield & Anna Scofield witnesses to the within will & made oath that they saw Abraham Holly write his name & seal the written will & declared the same to be his last will & testament & in his presence & at his desire subscribed our names as witnesses together with Reuben Scofield the other witness & at the same time take him to be of a sound disposing mind & memory.

Abraham Holly Jr. was born at Stamford 23 November 1758, the son of Abraham and Mary (Webb) Holly, who were married 12 January 1758. He was alive when his father's will was distributed 4 May 1822. His pension application, dated 26 July 1820, stated he was destitute and unable to work, and that his wife, aged 64 years, was 'from infirmity unable to Labour.2'"
  • Milit-War: He is listed on the rolls of at Capt. David Hoit's Company, John Mead's Regiment, in August 1776 on the Expedition to New York commanded by Lieut. Charles Smith.
  • Marriage*: Abraham married Bethia Ambler, daughter of Deacon Joshua Ambler and Bethia Weed, circa 1778, (The fact that their son Alanson Holly was in possession of Abraham Jr's Hunting Ridge property in 1831 verifies that this is the Abraham who married Bethia.).3

  • Town Meeting*: According to the town meeting minutes of Bedford, Westchester County, New York on 6 April 1784, it was voted that "Richard Sackett, James Trowbridge, Silvenus Reynd, John Banks, Jr....and Abraham Holly be a committee to carry out the resolution as follows: Voted that no persons that have ever been over to the enemy shall come into town to reside. • Position*: In 1785 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abraham was Highway Master, according to Town Minutes.4
  • Property Bounds*: Abraham's boundary was mentioned in a property transaction 2 May 1785 at Cowdelight, Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abstract of Bill of Sale, from Westchester County Deeds, Liber K, pp. 252-3: "Jacob Miller of Bedford, Westchester, NY, sold to Enos Miller of same place, for £150, New York money, all one piece of land in ... Bedford, in or near that part called Cowdelight, called above, eighty acres ... bounded ... begining at the northeast corner of Abraham Holly's land, by the highway then runing westerly by said Holly's land to a red oak tree, then northerly to a popler tree, then near the same coarse to a black oak tree, then near northeast to a walnut tree, then westerly to a black oak tree, then northeasterly to a butter-nut tree, then easterly to a rock by the first mentioned highway, then southerly by said highway to the place of beginning. Jacob Miller, his mark."

In the book, The Place-Names of Westchester County New York by Richard Lederer, Jr., it says: "Cows Delight, Bedford. Owned by Abraham Miller in 1775, it was the south-east corner of the town."5
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 3 September 1786, Abraham was affiliated with Bedford Congregational Church, Bedford, Westchester, New York, admitted during the ministry of Rev. John Davenport (18 May 1786 - 4 May 1791). List of members admitted on the same day, in addition to his wife:

Alexander Newman Holly, or Newman Alexander -- his name is given both ways in various sources. This photo was taken about the time of his marriage to Annie Guernsey, in 1881.

  • Photo Link: RELATED PHOTO(S).
  • Photo Link*: RELATED PHOTO(S).
  • Birth*: Alexander was born on 6 April 1858, Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, , Birthdate: as transcribed by DBT from Bible of William and Margaret McQueen. Confirmed by every census, Greenwood Union records, and gravestone. Error in obituary.1
  • He was the son of William Henry Holly and Margaret McQueen.
  • (Witness) Census: Alexander Newman Holly appeared on the census of 18 July 1860 in the household of William Henry Holly at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, (See record of William Henry Holly for details.).
  • Anecdote*: In Aug 2004 David B. Tilley gave to Holly Kilpatrick a 4x4 inch, 3 inch thick very old leather photo album with a clasp, which says Album on the side, and is stitched with thread on the fold where the leather is ripped. It contains 38 very old photos, not one of which is marked. It is very sad that these people are somehow connected to us, but we have no way to know who they are. There is a partial list of people on the first page, 22 lines, which do not map properly to the photos. However, this list of names may be important, so here it is: Aunt Jennie, Cousin Nellie, Cousin Nellie, Cousin Willie, Mrs. Hodge, Mrs. Rolman (?), Susie Merrell (?), Emma Holly (last name partially erased, it could be Holly), Andrew Wallace, May F. Mead, Sarah Purdy, Sarah Slater, L. Purdy & E. Holly, M. Mead, H. Holly, E. Holly (last three on one line), Robert Barmore (Baronore?), James Sullivan, Thomas Barnes, Saxe Martin, Schuyler Colfax, Samuel Williams. There are also some postcards or cutouts from a magazine in some of the picture pockets, and two of these are also listed in the 22 lines, Hugenot Lovers, and Lincoln Family. So the album is from after the Lincoln presidency.

Daniel Newman Holly1

M, b. between 1793 and 1800, d. 19 January 1853
  • Birth*: Daniel was born between 1793 and 1800, Connecticut.1
  • Census*: Daniel appeared on the census of 14 September 1850 at Boarding House, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, as as Newman, age 50, cooper. The boarding house is run by Coles Weeks, age 50, b. NY. 25 residents. The residents are mostly all laborers or coopers. Since this was run by Coles Weeks, I wondered if this could be the boarding house for Davenport & Weeks Rolling and Wire Mills in the Roxbury Stillwater area, started in 1825 by Theodore Davenport and Jonathan Weeks. Davenport was the 1st President of the Stamford Savings Bank. However, halfway down the next page, after more sections of coopers and laborers, there is an entry for Supt. of Dye Mill, Charles Barnes.2
  • Death*: Daniel died on 19 January 1853, Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut, listed in Town Records as "Newman Holly, age 60, white, Cooper, Place of Birth blank, Residence Darien, Cause of Death Strangulated Hernia." Listed in Darien First Congregational Church Records as "Daniel Newman Holly, Church: None, 20 Jan, age 55, Rupture." Barbara Kaye has him listed on Stamford Families website, with parents unknown. This is not necessarily the same person as the one living in 1850 at the boarding house, but both are listed as cooper. David Holly lived in Darien around 1853, and was a cooper also, and had a son named Newman. Since the two sources each list a different age at death, it suggests that a close family member was not available to provide accurate information.1,3,4

  • ChartLink*: RELATED CHART: (Holly Descendants Chart).

  • Research Note*: Charles Moses Holly compiled a handwritten genealogy of Holly families starting from John Holly and continuing into the late 1800's, which has been copied and sold. On page 65 of this book, Issue of David Holly, No. 42, it lists a son of David Holly and Sarah Little: Abraham Holly #164. Below C.M. Holly's written listing on Abraham is a note in a different handwriting. It is unreadable in my copy (HPK) but was transcribed from a different copy of the manuscript by my uncle David, "He (meaning Abraham) had a son David who married a Webb of Darien and died Dec. 12, 1855. He had issue Sylvester, Nelson, Theodore, all living in 1873. He died in 1828 ae. 81 years." This is a puzzling entry, because it does not list the 4 other children of David, and the Darien Church records show David's date of death as 2 Jan 1856, which although close does not match. This is further confused by a family story which said that an ancestor, Abraham, was a tailor's apprentice when he joined the Revolutionary Army at age 17. This Abraham would have been 30 years old in 1776. My uncle wondered if by chance the writer of this note had written the note under the wrong Abraham, and perhaps should have been written under Abraham, Jr. (p. 76, #190) son of Abraham #93 (p. 61 and 76), who was 17 when he joined the Revolution.

In this database, I am linking David Holly to Abraham, Jr. #190, b. 1758, son of Abraham #93, b. 1732/33, for the following reasons:

    1. I am relying on the assumption that there is some truth to the story about an Abraham who was 17 during the Revolutionary War. Therefore, I am looking for an Abraham as his father, and Abraham Jr. had children. However, Abraham of Darien had three boys in his 1790 household, so it seems he had sons after Isaac.

    2. David and Sally were affiliated with the Stanwich Congregational Church, during the time that Abraham, Jr.'s brothers and sisters were also attending that church, because they all lived on property inherited from Abraham, Sr., at Hunting Ridge, in nearby Stamford, CT. During the 1820's and '30's they had a choice of Stanwich, Stamford, or Bedford churches, because the closer Long Ridge Church was not started until 1842.

    3. Abraham # 164, born in 1746, lived in Darien, where Sally Webb, David's wife, grew up, and for that reason I leaned towards this Abraham, but his pension application mentions only one son, Isaac, and in his probate record at his death there is no mention of any children, although David was living. Toward the end of his life, David did live in Darien, but that may have been due to some property that his wife had inherited.

    4. Abraham, Jr. #190, married Bethia Ambler of Bedford. He lived in Bedford until about 1791, as we see from his listing as a Highway Master there. A deed in Bedford, in an area called Cows Delight, shows his property bounding that of several Millers. Many Millers lived in the Middle Patent area, that part of Bedford inside the loop of the Mianus River where it loops up into Westchester County from Fairfield County. In my Uncle David’s research notes from the 1950’s-1960’s, he writes “Adelaide Lyon Wishart: She mentions David Holly, also Middle Patent.” Therefore Addy, David’s great-grandaughter through Elizabeth, thought that David had something to do with Middle Patent. Was he born there? It is possible that he was born there around the time Abraham, Jr. moved back to Hunting Ridge. It is also possible that David lived in Middle Patent in the 1820’s and attended the Stanwich Church from there. However, the mention of Middle Patent is another possible connection to the Hunting Ridge Holly’s as opposed to Abraham of Darien. Also, David's son Theodore married a Miller from Bedford.

It is possible that Abraham, Jr. was not David's father, and even that his father was not named Abraham at all. It is also possible (even probable) that Abraham, Jr. did have other children after the first three born in Bedford, after he moved back to Hunting Ridge, but David might not have been one of them. The 1810 census lists several unidentified young family members. Since most Stanwich Church records for the 1700's are not extant, and due to a fissure in the church during the term of Platt Buffett we don't know how complete his records are, baptisms around that time might no longer be available.3
  • Birth*: David was born between 1790 and 1791 , probably Bedford or Pound Ridge, Westchester County, NY or Stamford, Fairfield County, CT.1
  • He was the son of Abraham Holly Jr. and Bethia Ambler.
  • Marriage*: David married Sarah Webb, daughter of William Webb and Susannah Weed, circa 1810, Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut, (the 1810 census for William Webb shows 1 female 16-25 which would be Sally.).1,4
  • Census: David appeared on the census of 1820 at Stanwich/Banksville area, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44, 1 in Mfg. Neighbors, Amos Mead, Charles Smith, Edward Lockwood, David and Edmd Banks, Wm. Jordan, Nath'l Palmer, Henry Hubbard, Levi Palmer, Walter Morrel. This household is listed on the last Greenwich page. Several of these names are associated with Stanwich and they were in the Stanwich Church at this time, so this is probably the Stanwich/Banksville area. In David's family in 1820, we would expect to see 2 males under 10, Sylvester and William Henry, so this listing suggests that they may have had another boy who died. The two girls would be Elizabeth and Maria.5
  • (Witness) Church Affiliation: As of 10 May 1829, David Holly was mentioned in the church affiliation record of Sally Holly, Stanwich Congregational Church, 237 Taconic Rd., Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut. See record of Sally Holly for further details.6
  • Research Note: 9 December 1829 Stanwich Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut two of David's sons were baptized. Platt Buffett's records state "Nelson & Theodore, the 2 sons of David Holly. He had other children older, but they chose to act for themselves -- and were not baptized."6
  • (Witness) Baptism: Note that his daughter Susan Holly was baptised on 6 April 1831 at Stanwich Congregational Church, 237 Taconic Rd., Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut.
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 25 December 1831, David was affiliated with Second Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, admitted as member.7
  • Census: David appeared on the census of 1840 at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as aged 50-59, with one male 10-14, one female 10-14, one female 20-29, and one female 40-49. 1 in Mfg and Trades. Surrounding names are listed under agriculture, except Joseph Ferris 2 Mfg, Rufus Adams, Daniel Ferris, and Ammi Ferris. Thomas Payne is listed as learned profession. This head of household was born 1781-1790. David's youngest boy, Nelson, would have been 18, so if this is our David, either they had another boy who died, or this is an apprentice or relative. Susan would have been 9, so could be the 10-14, and Maria would be 20. Names with David Holly, first page of 1840 Greenwich census:
Walter Lockwood, Saml Husted, Hezekiah Hoyt, John Ferris, Jr., Noah Lockwood (age 73, pensioner), David Holly, Oliver L. Ford (b. 1CC, Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich), George Ferris, Jr., Abel Ferris, William Quintard, Messenger Lockwood (age 75, pensioner, b. 1CC), John Lockwood, Joseph Ferris, William Lockwood, Peter Lockwood, Beal B. • Property Record*: David was involved in a property transaction on 8 August 1846 at Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut.9

  • Church Dismission*: As of 15 October 1852, David was not affiliated with Second Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut,Per the church minutes, "Voted that as David Holly & his wife Sally Holly have for a long time neglected to worship and commune with this church, this church withdraw its watch and care from them and that the clerk inform them of the action of the church."11
  • Address*: As of 1856, David lived at HollowTree Ridge Rd, near Linden and RR tracks, Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut as D. Holly on map, next to E.H. Bishop (Ezra Holly Bishop, Cabinet Maker and Undertaker, next to him in 1850 census).12
  • Death*: David died on 2 January 1856, Insane Hospital, Unknown Location, Probably Fairfield County, Connecticut, Entry in church death records reads "David Holly, in Insane Hospital. Church: Cong'l. Date: Jan. 2. Age: 65. Cause of death: ditto" from death above, which is "Consump."13
  • Research Note: Following are all the David Holly's in Fairfield County censuses 1790-1840, for purposes of elimination of confusion with our David Holly, and to enable me to better determine when a record refers to "our" David Holly:

David Holly, b. 1768 d. 1843, son of John III, m. Martha Coggswell (d. 1804), had a son David Holly 1789 (see below), son William 1791, son John Albert 1793, dau. Mary 1797, dau Elizabeth King 1800, son Sidney 1802, dau. Martha 1804.

    David 1708-1751 had Newman (b. 1749) who had David Holly, b. 1772, d. before 1814, m. 1798 Phebe Fairchild, son John Fairchild Holly 1799.

David Holly 1810 - 1860, youngest son of 8 children of Isaac (1769-1816) and Deborah Waters. m. 1839 Betsey Gilbert, had David G. (1840-1900), Hiram 1843, Jane 1846, Mary C. 1848. Not listed separately in 1840 census.
I am not aware of any other David Holly's in Fairfield County in this time frame.
