• Newspaper*: According to the 17 October 1900 edition of the New York Times, "MacRae -- Holly, Greenwich Depot, Conn. The wedding of Miss Emma Constant Holly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Holly, to Elmer Livingston MacRae, took place to-night at the home of the bride at Coscob.
  The house, whose history dates back to Revolutionary times, was decorated throughout with holly and thistle, the latter being in honor of the Scotch ancestry of Mr. MacRae. Candles in Colonial candlesticks and candelabra took the place of other lights, and Japanese lanterns artistically hung with pine were festooned on the oaken wainscoating.
  The bride wore a gown of white mousseline de soi over white silk, and the bridal veil was the same one worn by hergreat grandmother. Walter Strong Edwards was best man. The presents were principally silver and antique furniture. Friends were present from Boston, Bedford, Winchester, Roxbury and Greenwich.²

• Obituary*: Greenwich Time 19 July 1965 Obituary: George H. Holly, 70, a native of Greenwich, died yesterday in Greenwich Hospital. He lived at 42 Quarry Knoll. Mr. Holly was the son of the late Frank and Bertha Weeks Holly. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I, and was a retired painter. Surviving are his wife, Daisy Henklein Holly; one brother, Frank of Cos Cob; a sister, Mrs. Betha Palainkos of Norwalk, and a grandson, Dale Holly of New Fairfield, Conn. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 pm, at the Fred D. Knapp and Son Memorial. The Rev. M. Lawrence Snow of First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Putnam Cemetery. Friends may call tonight from 7 to 9.⁶

John, brother, age 38, single, born in CT and father born CT, mother NY, Teller in bank. Philip, brother, age 29, single, born in New Jersey and father born CT, mother NY, File Clerk in bank. [This is puzzling, where were these boys in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses? I see a 27-year-old John Holly in Blackwell's Island Penitentiary in 1920, and there is a 20-year-old John Holly, Boarder, Southeast, Putnam Co., NY in 1920 who is a Teamster on the Road.].²

Harriet Newell Holly¹

Harriett Newell Holly was the oldest child of William Henry Holly and Margaret McQueen.

• Birth*: Harriet was born on 22 August 1848, Connecticut , Not sure if born in Brooklyn or Connecticut. Birthdate: as transcribed by DBT from Bible of William and Margaret McQueen.
• She was the daughter of William Henry Holly and Margaret McQueen.
• Research Note*: We puzzled over the reason for naming the first daughter Harriet Newell. We could not find any evidence of Newell as a family name, and in fact, there were hardly any Newell families in that area of Connecticut over several hundred years. And there was no evidence of Newell as a name associated with Margaret McQueen's background. Reading a book about Greenwich's Second Congregational Church, I noticed a reference to a missionary named Harriet Newell from Massachusetts, one of the first missionaries to the Orient, and the first American woman to die on a missionary trip, in 1812, at age 19. Her husband subsequently published her letters and she became a sort of popular martyr, although she died of consumption. I then did a Google search on the name, and found literally hundreds of women named Harriet Newell So-and-So. It turns out that it was a very popular name for girls in the 1800's.

• (Witness) Census: Harriet Newell Holly appeared on the census of 6 July 1870 in the household of William Henry Holly at Port Chester, Rye, Westchester, New York, (See record of William Henry Holly for details.).³
• Newspaper*: According to the 1 June 1871 edition of the Port Chester Journal, Port Chester, New York, Miss Harriett Holly was elected to the office of R.H.S. by the Redemption Lodge, No. 233, Independent Order of Good Templars, at their Thursday evening, April 27th meeting. A total of 14 officers to various positions were elected that night, and installed on May 11th. Another name mentioned in the list was Benjamin Mead, who was elected W. T. Whether or not this could have been Ben Mead, nephew of Elizabeth Mead Guernsey, I don't know. The Good Templars was a temperance organization with Masonic connections.⁴

• Address: As of between 1891 and 1892, Harriet lived at 7 Broad, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut as Directory runs from 1887-1892. Listed for 2 yrs. Middle initial M. Not sure if this is the same Harriet Holly, but I think so.⁶
• Census*: Harriet appeared on the census of 9 June 1900 at Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, as boarder in household of Norman Wilcox and wife Etta M. Age 51. No occupation listed.⁷
• Address*: As of 1907, Harriet lived at 109 Stillwater Ave, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut as Miss Harriet Newell Holly, housekeeper.⁸
• Census: Harriet appeared on the census of 20 April 1910 at 15 Oak Hill St., Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, as Head, age 60, listed as Harriet N. Holly, with boarder Norman R. Wilcox, age 35 (2nd household in 2-hh dwelling). Age a little off, but shows mother b. Scotland.⁹
• Census: Harriet appeared on the census of 24 January 1920 at 8 Bush Ave, Port Chester Village, Rye Township, Westchester, New York, as roomer, age 72, listed as Harriet S., in household of Alex Lorry (?) and wife Catherine (who are of Russian background, speaking Hebrew, the man immigrated in 1906.).¹⁰
• Death*: Harriet died on 20 March 1927, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York, at age 78, of bronchial pneumonia and general arteriosclerosis. (Perhaps in a nursing home?).¹¹
• Burial*: Harriet was buried on 22 March 1927, Greenwood Union Cemetery, Map A, Lot So. 1/2 116, Grave 6, Rye, Westchester, New York, Plot owner, Miss Margaret Holly. Undertaker W.M. Craft. No stone, listed on plot card.¹¹
