  • Note*: [He had children Benjamin, Joshua, Rachel, Bethia, Sarah, Isaac, and Joseph, to be entered.].

  • Birth*: Benjamin was born circa 1760 , Conklin Mann, in his 1933-34 articles on Richard Ambler descendants, writes "His birth date offers a problem. His g.s. in St. Matthew's Ch. Yd., Bedford, states that Benjamin Ambler died 13 Dec. 1811 in his 62d yr. The census of 1800 shows him over 45 years old. On the other hand if Stamford town and ch. recs. are correct, Joshua Ambler named 3 sons Benjamin. Town recs. show a Benjamin, son of Joshua and Bethiah b. 20 Dec. 1749, a 2d Benjamin b. 24 Sept., 1758, d. 23 Feb. 1759. First ch. recs. have 'Benjamin, Sarah, Deborah and Bethiah children of Joshua and Bethia Ambler were bap. 3 Dec., 1760.' The compiler believes that Benjamin, who survived, was b. 1759-60."2

  • Birth*: Benjamin was born on 27 July 1830, Pound Ridge, Westchester County, New York.1
  • He was the son of Joseph Ambler and Maria Rodgers.1
  • Biography*: 1886: He "received his education under the care of Samuel L. Holmes, who kept a select school in Bedford; at the Bedford Academy under Mr. Close, Mr. Williamson and others, and at Union Academy. In 1853 he entered the mercantile business in Bedford, in partnership with the late Hezekiah D. Robertson, under the firm-name of Ambler & Robertson. In 1858 the partnership was dissolved and he continued the business until 1863, since which time his occupation has been that of a farmer.

In his earlier life Mr. Ambler took an active interest in politics, and in 1854 was elected supervisor, being the second Democrat in many years to achieve that distinction. He was again chosen to that office in 1862. From 1853 to 1863 he was postmaster of Bedford, and was deputy sheriff from 1852 to 1855. In the fall of 1858 he was the candidate of the Democratic party for sheriff, but though he ran largely ahead of his ticket, he was defeated by a small majority. He was the president of the board of trustees of the Bedford Female Institute for some fifteen years, during the period when it was most successful. Mr. Ambler is a gentleman of dignified and courteous address, careful and accurate in business matters, of genial temperament and kind disposition. He was married, on September 23, 1863, to Miss Anna M. Lounsbery, daughter of James Lounsbery, of Bedford. He has no children."1
