  • Birth*: Josephine was born in 1848, Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut.2
  • She was the daughter of Solomon Lyon.1
  • Marriage*: Josephine married Edward Payson Holly, son of Stephen Holly and Emeline E. Reynolds, on 16 October 1866, Bedford, Westchester County, New York, S.R. Lyon and James Trowbridge, witnesses.3

"Mrs. E. P. Holley returned on Monday from a visit to her sister, Mrs. Edward Raymond, at Bedford, NY."
  • Death*: Josephine died in 1916.
  • Obituary*: Greenwich News and Graphic 25 April 1916 Obituary: "Mrs. Edward P. Holley: Josephine Lyon Holley, who died at the Greenwich Hospital on April 20th, from complications following pneumonia, was the wife of the late Edward Payson Holley, and the daughter of Solomon and Hannah Rundle Lyon of Bedford, New York. On her mother's side she was a descendant of the Rev. George Phillips, who settled at Watertown, Mass, in 1632, and on her paternal side a descendant of Thomas Lyon, who settled at Fairfield, Conn., in 1632 and who married Martha Johannah Winthrop, granddaughter of Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts. The funeral services were held at her late home and attended by a large number of her relatives and friends. The Rev Charles Taylor, pastor of the 2nd Congregational church of which Mrs. Holley was a member for nearly fifty years, officiated. Mr. Taylor's remarks were those of a close friend. He said in part: "It was here, in the midst of her loved ones and in the changing and ever increasing circle of friends that came and went, that she wove that wonderful fabric of character and service which all shall treasure as a priceless possession. Here was a love that calculated not the cost of sacrifice, nor ever implied that it had a cost. The unselfishness of her daily life was so habitual and natural to her that it almost made necessary the perspective of death to fully appreciate it. The simplicity, frankness and common-sensibleness of her spirit might disguise to the casual observer the essential divinity which abides in these homely virtues, but the initiated recognized that in these resided one of the secrets of her power."4"

The house, whose history dates back to Revolutionary times, was decorated throughout with holly and thistle, the latter being in honor of the Scotch ancestry of Mr. MacRae. Candles in Colonial candlesticks and candelabra took the place of other lights, and Japanese lanterns artistically hung with pine were festooned on the oaken wainscoating.
The bride wore a gown of white mousseline de soi over white silk, and the bridal veil was the same one worn by hergreat grandmother. Walter Strong Edwards was best man. The presents were principally silver and antique furniture. Friends were present from Boston, Bedford, Winchester, Roxbury and Greenwich.2

Bartolomew Belden Mason1

M, b. 16 December 1803, d. 20 October 1881
  • Research Note*: MDP in his Pratt Genealogy notes that there were three more daughters who did not survive to grow up. About Bartolomew's daughters, MDP writes, "All four of B.B. Mason's daughters found their way to Indiana during, or prior, to the Civil War. Harriet settled in Delphi and married Benjamin Pickard, who Laura was visiting in 1864 when Richard Henry Pratt was home for several months on recruiting duty. They met and were married in Harriet's home and where, just before the close of the war, the compiler of this genealogy [i.e., The Pratt Genealogy] was born. There never was a more devoted pair of lovers than Henry and Laura. Letters between them when separated contained the most endearing terms, even up to the time of Henry's death sixty years later. The other two sisters, Marion and Nana, were business women -- dressmakers on a grand scale with many employees and catering to the wealthy ladies of the day. Marion's establishment was in LaFayette while Nana's was in St. Louis, Mo. Marion married Henry Amos Jennings. Nana married William L. Allen. Nor surviving children resulted, nor were the marriages nearly as successful as the business enterprises."1
