Jean Treddenich of the church looked in some old ledgers for a mention of the burial of Elizabeth Jane or Solomon, but did not find them listed.4,5

- Birth*: Henry was born in 1738.
- He was the son of Elnathan Mead and Sarah Lyon.1
- Marriage*: Henry married Elizabeth Denton, daughter of Humphrey Denton, on 10 September 1775, 2nd Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut.2
- Biography*: 25 February 1779: On the occasion of General Putnam's ride down Put's Hill, and the Tories' takeover of the town, "The citizens hung about the village as near as they dared, hiding in the swamps and byplaces during the whole day, taking advantage of every opportunity, by some daring feat, to secure prisoners, and even fire upon the enemy.
About an hour after the arrival of the body of Tories, Gov. Tryon with his full force of about twelve hundred men, took full possission of the town. He made his quarters at the house of Mr. Henry Mead, who then kept a public house on the present site of the residence of Miss Sarah Lewis and Mrs. Mason. The soldiers, meantime, separated themselves into squads, and pillaged every house in the neighborhood; a large body of them visited Coscob, where they destroyed the salt-works which were upon Bush's Point, a small sloop, and a sloop's storehouse. A party of them also entered the house of Daniel and Joshua Smith, which was situated a little way south of the present parsonage of the Second Congregational Society."3 - Biography: 1787: Frederick Hubbard writes, "Lewis and Mason Streets are named after two prominent old-time families. One of the most interesting spots in the Borough, rife as it is with historic memories, is the northeast corner of Putnam Avenue and Lafayette Place, where the Rev. Dr. Lewis lived, and which was subsequently owned by his daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Mason, and his grandson, Theodore L. Mason, M.D.
"Before the war of the Revolution, this corner and many acres besides belonged to Henry Mead. He was the landlord of a Colonial tavern which stood near the junction of the main country road and the road to Sherwood's Bridge, now Glenville. Here he entertained, in such style as the times permitted, Gen. Putnam, Gen. Lafayette and other Revolutionary notables.
"Times were hard in Greenwich after the close of the war and Henry Mead struggled along for a few years and then moved with his family to New York City. As far as is known, none of them returned.
"He sold the old homestead or tavern in 1787 for three hundred and twenty pounds. The land, bounded northerly by the highway and what is now the Lenox House property and westerly by the road to Piping Point, now Greenwich Avenue, was purchased from Amos Mead and Henry Mead, respectively..."
The property was acquired by Dr. Isaac Lewis, for many years pastor of the Second Congregational Church. Hubbard continues, "Upon acquiring the property he at once proceeded to remove the Herry Mead house, and as the church then had no parsonage, he built a fine Colonial mansion about seventy-five feet back from the corner....It was built in the summer of 1786, but was not an old-fashioned sweep-back, because the Colonies had become independent, and the necessity for a one-story house, which is said to have been exempt from taxation by the Crown, no longer existed."
(The date of 1786 conflicts somewhat with the date of 1787 as the sale of the property, and also with that of the deed record.).4 - Property Extract*: Henry was Grantor in a property transaction on 17 July 1789 at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as follows: for the consideration of £155, 6 shillings and ten pence New York money, received of Isaac Lewis, Clerk of Greenwich, Grantee, Henry sold to Grantee a certain parcel of land Isaac Lewis, Witness(es): in Greenwich, bounded southerly by his own land, westerly by the road leading to Piping Point so-called [note: became Greenwich Avenue], northerly in part by land belonging to Isaac Holmes Jun'r, late of Greenwich, dec'd and in part on land of Capt. Mentioned in 1810 as 'of New Haven', a certain 'Henry Mead, physician' appeared in the New York directory for 1816-17. This was the alleged maker of a solitary all-white vase [Plate 19, Clement's Own Pioneer Potters] on the evidence of a paper label: Finished in New York 1816. A little late then, 'In 1819 the manufacture of Porcelain . . . was commenced in New York by Dr. H. Mead' [J. Leander Bishop, History of American Manufactures]. No less confusing, the doctor's obituary notice [1843] said that 'he commenced at Jersey City'.

The Coroner held an inquest on Monday, at the New York City Hospital, on the body of Dr. Henry Mead, aged 65, a native of Connecticut. The deceased was formerly Alderman of the Tenth Ward, and afterwards Collector of the Thirteenth Ward. He had been a man of wealth and fashion, (to use his own words) a practising physician in this city, a man of genius and enterprize, being the first who ever manufactured porcelain or china ware in this country, which he commenced at Jersey City, the first who ever made pins here, and the first who ever refined camphor, in this country. He had lost his wife some four years ago, she having been drowned in a cellar. He had become greatly reduced in circumstances and was very destitute. He went to the City Hospital on Friday to lodge. He became delirious and was attacked with convulsions on Saturday, refused medicines, and died about 3 o'clock on Sunday morning. A post mortem examination was executed by Dr. Wetherspoon, and the jury found that the deceased died of inflamation of the brain."

Regimental History
CONNECTICUT
TWENTY-EIGHTH REGIMENT C. V. INFANTRY.
(Nine Months.)
WRITTEN BY LIEUTENANT-COLONEL W. T. BATCHELLER, LATE OF THE
TWENTY-EIGHTH CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS.
THE Twenty-eighth was the last Connecticut regiment
organized under the call for nine months volunteers. It was
recruited in the Fourth Congressional District, and was
composed of only eight companies: five companies from Fairfield
County and three companies from Litchfield County. Samuel P.
Ferris of Stamford, a graduate of West Point, was commissioned
Colonel, holding the office during the entire service of the
regiment, and was a great favorite with the men.
The Twenty-eighth rendezvoused about September 15, 1862,
at New Haven, and was in tents and barracks at Camp Terry about
two months. November 15th the regiment was mustered into the
service of the United States, and three days later took leave
of New Haven and Connecticut by boat. On the next day,
November 19th, the regiment went into camp at Centerville, on
Long Island, for ten days only, as it broke camp November 29th,
and six companies went on board steamer "Che Kiang," with a
portion of the Twenty-third Connecticut, under command of
Colonel Holmes. The two companies not on the "Che Kiang" were
sent by steamer, and joined the regiment after many
disagreeable experiences.
The "Che Kiang" sailed from New York on the 3d of
December, 1862, and had a very rough passage, encountering a
terrible storm off Hatteras, but reached Ship Island safely on
the 12th. The regiment remained only long enough to recover
from sea-sickness, and then re-embarked and sailed from Ship
Island December 17th. On December 19th it landed at Camp
Parapet at Carrollton, La., but remained there only for a short
time, leaving for Pensacola, Fla., on the 20th, and arriving
there on the 22d.
At Pensacola the Twenty-eighth made a long and pleasant
stay. The various companies were quartered in houses abandoned
by the owners when the Confederates evacuated the place. Drill
and guard duties occupied much of the time, but the work was
just about enough for health, and the salubrious winter climate
added to make the sojourn of the regiment here memorable, and
this the most pleasant of any of its stopping-places.
Expeditions into the interior and along the coast were
occasionally made, serving to break the monotony of camp and
guard duty, and once in a while the cry of "Steamer coming!"
would cause the boys to hurry to the housetops in order to
catch a glimpse of the welcome visitor; but too often the cry
was only raised by some practical joker. When the steamer came
with the mail there was a busy time, reading the "news from
home," and, until the steamer's departure, writing to friends
and loved ones.
Pensacola was evacuated March 20th, and the Twenty-eighth
moved to Barrancas and into tents. Camp duties were about the
same here as at Pensacola, an occasional expedition serving to
give variety to camp life.
May 10th the regiment left Barrancas by steamer, and on
the 12th landed at Brashear City, La., and left there without
regret on May 23d, arriving at Springfield Landing May 25th,
and at Port Hudson on May 26th. While at this place, and until
the surrender was made by the Confederates, the Twenty-eighth
was continually under fire, and assisted in all the various
siege operations and in the trenches. In the assault on June
14th it furnished one hundred of the two hundred and fifty men
for the storming party or "forlorn hope." Its loss in killed
and wounded was severe in this engagement. At the surrender
the Twenty-eighth moved inside the fortifications and remained
at this place until its departure for home on August 7th.
Several died on the way home, having become enfeebled by the
climate and by disease previous to embarking for Connecticut.
The route home was via Mississippi River to Cairo, and thence
by rail.
On August 28th the survivors were mustered out at New
Haven.
