Meritt to the Court of Probate for the District of Stamford, dated February 20th 1847 has been given to the Selectmen of the Town of Greenwich. Greenwich, February 27th 1847. Titus Mead, Selectmen, Gideon Close of Greenwich.
  • Probate Record: John was listed in probate records on 23 March 1847 at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, as follows: Thomas A. Mead's petition: At a Court of Probate holden at Greenwich, within and for the District of Stamford, March 23rd 1847.
Notice of the pendency of the application of Thomas A. Mead, having pursuant to the order of this Court been given, for the sale of real estate of John A. Meritt. And this Court upon the representation of the Conservator named in said application, no other person appearing to contest said application, or evidence to rebut the same, finds at an adjournment from the 13th of March of said Court, the facts therein stated to be true, and doth thereupon order and decree, that the whole of the said real estate described in the petitioner's application or so much thereof as in the opinion or judgement of the Conservator Thomas A. Mead of said John A. Meritt, as shall be deemed reasonable and proper by him, the said Conservator, be sold; and that the said Conservator sell the same either at public or private sale, on his, the said Conservator first giving bond to said Court according to law. Ephraim Golden, Judge.
  • Anecdote*: This may be, and probably is, totally unrelated, but the 1860 census of Thomas A. Mead, John A. Merritt's conservator, lists in the final column Insane and the rest is difficult, could say, Insane man in home. However, in 1860, John A. Merritt is listed in the census with Lavinia in Brooklyn.5
  • Census: John appeared on the census of 1860 at Ward 4, District 2, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, as age 50, spelled of John A. Merrett, occupation column blank, with Lauria, age 50., Geo. age 18, Mary J, 17, Seamstress, and Sarah J. Peck, age 24, Seamstress. All listed as born CT except Sarah, NY. Sarah is Lavinia's niece, and is married to Joseph A. Peck at the time, who is living in Greenwich in the household of Humphrey Denton, with his mother.
  • Death*: John died on 21 April 1861, at age 51.1
  • Burial*: John was buried on 23 April 1861, Union Cemetery, Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, (burial dt. est.).1
