Mead: To the Court of Probate for the District of Stamford. The Petition of Thomas A. Mead of Greenwich, in said District, respectfully showeth that he is Conservator of John A. Merritt of said Greenwich, who is a lunatic and distracted person. That said John A. is the owner in fee of a certain tract of land lying in said Greenwich in quantity forty acres (more or less) with buildings thereon. Bounded Northerly by land of David Brown, Easterly by highway in part and partly by land of Amos & William L. M. Mead, Thomas A. Mead and the land of Benajah Bouton, Southerly by land belonging to the heirs of Bradley Redfield deceased and land of Amos & William L.M. Mead. Westerly by land of the heirs of Bradley Redfield, and the said Amos & William L.M. Mead. That there are sundry debts charges and claims against the said John A the ward of the petitioner that has become absolutely necessary to be liquidated & satisfied out of said lands. That the annual income of his estate is inadequate for his support and the payment of the interest on said claims. That his interest would be greatly promoted by a sale of the premises above described, or so much as would liquidate the claims against the same. That said land is valued at about two thousand six hundred dollars. He therefore prays for leave to sell the same pursuant to the Statute in such cases made & provided. Greenwich February 20th 1847, Thom A. Mead, Conservator
At a Court of Probate holden at Greenwich, within and for the District of Stamford, the 20th day of February, A.D. 1847.
Ordered - That the foregoing petition be heard upon its merits and determined at the Probate Office in Greenwich, on the 13th day of March 1847. at nine o'clock A. M. and that notice of the pendency thereof be given to the Selectmen of said Greenwich and to all persons intereted therein, by the publication of this order in the Stamford Advocate, at least three weeks successively before the said 13th day of March. Ephraim Golden, Judge.4 - Probate Record: John was listed in probate records on 27 February 1847 at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, as follows: Conservator's Petition: We hereby acknowledge that reasonable notice of the pendency of the petition of Thomas A. Mead, Conservator of John A. Meritt for the sale of the real estate of the said John A. Meritt to the Court of Probate for the District of Stamford, dated February 20th 1847 has been given to the Selectmen of the Town of Greenwich. Greenwich, February 27th 1847. Titus Mead, Selectmen, Gideon Close of Greenwich.
- Probate Record: John was listed in probate records on 23 March 1847 at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut, as follows: Thomas A. Mead's petition: At a Court of Probate holden at Greenwich, within and for the District of Stamford, March 23rd 1847.
Notice of the pendency of the application of Thomas A. Mead, having pursuant to the order of this Court been given, for the sale of real estate of John A. Meritt. And this Court upon the representation of the Conservator named in said application, no other person appearing to contest said application, or evidence to rebut the same, finds at an adjournment from the 13th of March of said Court, the facts therein stated to be true, and doth thereupon order and decree, that the whole of the said real estate described in the petitioner's application or so much thereof as in the opinion or judgement of the Conservator Thomas A. Mead of said John A. Meritt, as shall be deemed reasonable and proper by him, the said Conservator, be sold; and that the said Conservator sell the same either at public or private sale, on his, the said Conservator first giving bond to said Court according to law. Ephraim Golden, Judge. - Anecdote*: This may be, and probably is, totally unrelated, but the 1860 census of Thomas A. Mead, John A.
