They went first to Nevada, near Reno, where Peleg became a successful rancher and community leader before his early death at age 42. Pardon and Joshua went to California in the late 1860's. Pardon lived in California until his death in 1909, but Joshua returned to Rhode Island in 1883, and spent the rest of his life there. All of Joshua's children lived in the East except Joshua, Jr., who spent most of his adult life in Glenn and Colusa Counties, California.

- He was the son of Pardon Brown and Lucy Armstrong.1

Not in that order, and intermixed are other names, including EGILL, Elisabeth, who married Peleg. Not sure if EGILL is a typo.4
- Census: Joshua appeared on the census of 1867 at Surprise Valley, Siskiyou County, California, as Joshua Coggshal Brown, in Surprise Valley. His brother Pardon also listed. At this time, Surprise Valley was part of Siskiyou County.5
- History Note*: Modoc county was a part of the Utah Territory, and then transferred into the Nevada Territory when it was created. When Nevada became a state, Modoc County was placed within the boundaries of California, becoming a part of Shasta County. Shasta County contained what is now Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Lassen and Modoc counties. Shasta County was divided into two counties in 1852, Shasta and Siskiyou, with Modoc being placed in Siskiyou County.
In 1872, an effort was made by the residents of Surprise Valley, along with others who had settled in this area, to form a new county. On February 17, 1874, a bill was passed and signed by then Governor Newton Booth authorizing the formation of a new county -- Modoc. It was first purposed to name the new county "Canby" for the General who lost his life in the Modoc Indian War. Later name "Summit" was suggested but there were many objections and it was finally named Modoc.
Mododc county is the most northeastern county of California and is bounded on the north by the state of Oregon, on the east by the State of Nevada, on the south by Plumas County Ca., and on the west by Siskiyou county Ca. Modoc county received its name from the celebrated Native American Indian tribe whose fierce resistance to the progress of the whites in their settlement of the country made this section notorious over the wild United States.
An election was held on May 5, 1874, to elect county officials and to select a county seat. Lake City received the highest votes as to being the county seat; however, the county fathers decided to Make Dorris Bridge (now Alturas) the county seat, as it contained the majority of people. It was also felt that Dorris Bridge would serve the interests of the new county to better advantage than Lake City, as it was located at the crossroads of the main north-south and east-west routes. in 1868 at Surprise Valley, Modoc County, California.6 - Census*: Joshua appeared on the census of 10 June 1870 at 2nd Ward, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, as Farmer, age 42, Real Estate $5,000 and personal assets $10,000, b. - Biography*: 1887: The History of Newport County, Rhode Island, includes the following biographical sketch of Joshua:
"Joshua C. Brown, though a native of Newport county, and at present one of its enterprising citizens, has spent much of his active life in California. His grandfather, Peleg Brown, resided in Narragansett, though he was born in Newport county. Among his children was Pardon Brown, who early removed to Middletown township, where he spent much of his life as a farmer. He married Lucy, daughter of Captain Nathaniel Armstrong, of Narragansett, and had children: George A., Joshua C., Mary A. (Mrs. George Coggeshall) and Nathaniel A. He contracted a second marriage with Sarah, daughter of Captain Peleg Sanford, their children being: Lucy (Mrs. James Brown), Peleg, Lydia (Mrs. John Sanford) and Pardon.
Joshua C. was born February 27th, 1828, in Middletown, Newport county, R.I., and from early youth until the age of eighteen assisted in the farm his father owned, meanwhile pursuing the English branches at the neighboring public school. He determined to acquire a trade and chose that of a wheelwright, establishing himself in connection with his brother in his native township. At a later date, varying somewhat his occupation, he devoted his skill to the work of a house carpenter. Mr. Brown, like many ambitious spirits of that day, followed the tide of emigration to California in the year 1850. His business, that of a cattle dealer, necessitated many trips across the plains, no less than ten long and wearisome journeys being made in succession with droves and herds. At a later day the superior facilities offered by railroads rendered the shipment of cattle an easy task. Mr. Brown was for several years located in Nevada, and subsequently purchased from the government a ranch in Northern California. Here he engaged in the raising of blooded stock, shipping from Kentucky short-horn Durhams and from Rhode Island Southdown sheep. In 1883 he returned to his native county, located in Newport, and has since devoted his time to building and improving the property he owns in the city.
Mr. Brown was married on the 14th of January, 1853, to Jane, daughter of Captain William Smith, of Middletown. Their children are: Nebraska, wife of A.A. Tilley; California, wife of Daniel Chase; Nevada, married to Herbert Tilley; Esmeralda, Pardon and Joshua C. Mr. Brown was a second time married May 2d, 1872, to Elizabeth A. Ward of Newport, a descendant of Governor Ward of Rhode Island, and daughter of Henry Ward of Middletown. Mr. Brown is a member of the First Baptist church of Newport, which he joined at the age of fourteen. He, with others organized a Sabbath school in Modoc county, California, and was until his departure on of its most active supporters and workers. This school formed the nucleus around which grew a prosperous church, of which he was an exemplary member. Mr. Brown is an avowed prohibitionist and earnest in the cause of temperance as in all Christian work."9 - Membership*: In 1889 at Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island,Joshua was a member of Newport Prohibition Club, of which he was President in 1889 and 1890.

Peleg Brown drove in some cattle that year, and Drexler & Sloan did also....It was, and is (written 1881) the practice of stock owners, to drive their herds to the mountains in the spring, bringing them back in the fall to winter in the comparatively mild climate of the valleys. The winter of 1959 was the most severe one that has been experienced by the cattle owners, and large numbers of stock perished." in 1857 at Washoe County, Nevada.

- Newspaper Item: According to the 17 January 1878 edition of the Nevada State Journal, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada,
INCORPORATION: Articles of incorporation of the Truckee and Steamboat Irrigation Canal Company have been filed in the Clerk's office. Object: To construct and maintain a water ditch or canal to convey water frm the Truckee River, above Verdi, to Steamboat Springs. Trustees: Peleg Brown, Peter Dalton, B.B. Norton, A. M. Lamb, J.L. Downs, James Burke. This is a great undertaking, will require an immense sum of money, and when constructed will irrigate thousands of acres of land which can be reached by water in no other way. We hope the project will be carried out. - Newspaper Item*: According to the May 1878 edition of the Nevada State Journal, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada,
Another Big Ditch: The Truckee and Steamboat Springs Canal Co. intend to commence work. Their scheme is to build a ditch from the State line to Steamboat Springs, carrying the waters of the Truckee along the base of the mountains, and be the means of irrigating thousands of acres of good land, now worthless for want of water. The ditch will be 10,500 rods in length, and the estimated cost of construction, $40,000. It will take just a year to do the work. Messrs. Peleg Brown, Pete Dalton, Jas. Burke, E. Crane, J.L. Downs, B.B. Norton, and others are the projectors.9 - Newspaper Item: According to the 15 May 1878 edition of the Nevada State Journal, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada,
"Contract Let: The Truckee and Steamboat Springs Canal Company yesterday awarded the contract for their ditch to Quong Yee Wo & Co., of San Francisco, for $36,000, work to commence immediately. The other bids read as follows: L. Richardson and sons, $44,444; S.F. Hoole, $41,000; A.C. White, $44,000; Ah. JHack, $36,000; J.W. Johnson, $40,000; Ah Joe, $39,000; Ah Sam, $38,500; Chung Kee, $37,600; H.L. W. Knox, $37,000; J.K. Everett, $36,800; C. Pardins, $46,200." This award caused considerable consternation. The Workingmen Club of Reno members vowed to resist by force the working of Chinamen on the Canal. - Obituary*: Reno Evening Gazette 9 September 1878 Obituary: Death of Peleg Brown: Reno was startled this morning by the news of the death of Peleg Brown. The said report was soon found to be only too true. Mr. Brown was in town yesterday and promised to attend to-day a meeting of the Steamboat Irrigation and Canal Ditch Company, in which he was largely interested. He had been in poor health for a long time, his disease bing [sic] consumption, and only last week returned from a visit to California, whither he had gone in search of health. On his return to his ranch- which is about ten miles from town on the Virginia road- he seemed to be as well as usual. At 11 o'clcok, however, he was seized with a difficulty in breathing, but neither he nor this family thought any thing serious was about to happen. Later, however, he grew worse and Mrs. Brown insisted on dispatching messengers for physicians. Mr. Brown soon realized his situation and calling his wife and children to his bedside bad them a love farewell. He breathed his last at 4 o'clock this morning. Dr. Bergman, who arrived about an hour after death had taken place, says that Mr. Brown probably died from a combination of Lung and heart disease. Deceased was one of the best citizens of Washoe county, and his taking off is the principal topic of conversation among the people to-day. He was a good friend to the interests of this region and was always active in public enterprises. For four years he served the county faithfully in the capacity of Commissioner, and since his term of office expired, a year ago last January, the county affairs have never been in so prosperous and satisfactory a condition. Mr. Brown was one of the first settlers of this valley, arriving her in 1859 and has since then resided principally upon the farm where he ended his life today. He was about forty-three years of age. He leaves behind a wife and four children. Mr. Brown died in good circumstances, leaving an estate valued at between $30,000 and $40,000. The time for the funeral has not yet been decided upon.

Robert N. Buck, a distinguished pilot who in the 1930s crossed the continent at record speed, flew a light plane higher than anyone had done before and photographed ancient ruins of the Yucatán from the air for the first time — all by the age of 20 — died on April 14 in Berlin, Vt. He was 93 and had continued to fly gliders into his late 80s.
Robert N. Buck in 1930 before the start of a flight to Los Angeles in an attempt to break the junior cross-country record. He was 16.
Mr. Buck, a resident of North Fayston, Vt., died of complications of a fall, his son, Robert O. Buck, said last week. News of the death was not made public outside Vermont until this month.
A retired chief pilot of T.W.A., Mr. Buck was also a respected aviation writer. He was a particular authority on the weather, and the bumpy place where it meets aviation. During World War II, he performed research on hazardous weather of all kinds by flying gamely into it and recording what he saw, heard and felt.
His book “Weather Flying,” published in 1970 and now in its fourth edition, is considered required reading for pilots. Mr. Buck’s other books include a memoir, “North Star Over My Shoulder,” published by Simon & Schuster in 2002.
Long before all this, Mr. Buck was nationally known as a flying prodigy, going aloft in one-seaters, dressed in leather helmet and goggles, without even a radio to assist him. He pored over maps, steered by the stars and telephoned his parents after every flight.
In April 1930, at 16, Mr. Buck became the youngest licensed pilot in the United States. Later that year, flying from Newark to Los Angeles, he broke the junior transcontinental airspeed record. On the return trip, just for sport, he broke it again. At 17, he wrote a book about it, “Burning Up the Sky,” published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1931.
By the time he was 18, Mr. Buck had set 14 junior aviation records. These included the junior altitude record for light planes, which he broke in July 1930 by ascending to 15,000 feet. (In 1936, Mr. Buck, flying with a cousin, would set a world distance record for light planes, flying nonstop from Burbank, Calif., to Columbus, Ohio — 1,986 miles — in a Lambert Monocoupe.)
Red-haired and apple-cheeked, the young Mr. Buck was known in the papers as “the Schoolboy Pilot.” They chronicled his every exploit, including what he carried in his plane (a Bible and a package of sandwiches made by his mother) and his life on the ground (“he likes polo, hunting, riding and milk drinking,” The New York Telegram reported in 1931).
Robert Nietzel Buck was born on Jan. 29, 1914, in Elizabethport, N.J., and reared in Westfield, N.J. At 15, fired up by the well-publicized exploits of Charles A. Lindbergh, he and a friend built a glider, which Bob took to the skies before crashing from an altitude of 50 feet. He began lessons in a real plane on his 16th birthday, after his parents made certain that the Westfield airport had no looming telegraph wires nearby.
On Sept. 29, 1930, Bob Buck set out to break the junior speed record for a coast-to-coast flight, which stood at 29 hours, 40 minutes. Armed with six chocolate bars and a canteen of water, he pedaled his bicycle to the airport in Newark. He did not have a driver’s license.
Climbing into his open biplane, a Pitcairn Mailwing, he took off from Newark’s cinder runway. After half a dozen stops for fuel and repairs, he landed in Los Angeles, in record time, on Oct. 4. (The historical accounts of Mr. Buck’s total time in the air vary, but it was 28 hours, give or take.) On the return trip, aided by tailwinds, he shaved the time down to 23 hours, 47 minutes.
Mr. Buck’s other speed records included a round trip to Havana, which he made in 13 hours, 5 minutes, in 1931. On arriving, he was greeted by adoring crowds and presented with a 12-inch cigar, which he later gave, as instructed, to President Herbert Hoover.
In late 1933 and early 1934, on assignment for the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Buck and a friend, Robert Nixon, 19, spent three months roaming the Mexican jungle by air, photographing lost Mayan cities of the Yucatán. They were the youngest aerial explorers ever, the newspapers reported.
Mr. Buck joined T.W.A. (then Transcontinental and Western Air) in 1937 as a co-pilot. He became a pilot in 1940 and in 1945 was named chief pilot, an administrative job. But he chafed behind a desk and was soon back in the cockpit.
During the war, Mr. Buck, working on a joint project of T.W.A. and the Army, went “looking for trouble,” as he often said afterward, piloting a B-17 into snow, hail and thunderstorms all over the globe.
“I was able to put my nose in any kind of weather I wanted to fly through,” he told National Public Radio in 2002. “We’d sit around, waiting until the weather was bad and then go fly through it.” The worst weather in the world, Mr. Buck found, was in the largely open stretch between New York and Kansas City, Mo.
For his research, Mr. Buck was awarded the Air Medal, one of only a few civilians to receive it, in 1946.
Mr. Buck is survived by his son, Robert Orion, of Waterbury Center, Vt. (A retired pilot for Delta Air Lines, the younger Mr. Buck was named, after some marital negotiation, for his father’s love of celestial navigation. His father’s first choice had been Betelgeuse, a star in Orion.) Also surviving are a daughter, Ferris Buck, of North Fayston; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Buck’s wife, the former Jean Pearsall, died in 2004. They were married, not without incident, in 1938. On the appointed day, as the bride-to-be and assembled guests waited in New Jersey, Mr. Buck found himself stuck in Kansas City, a passenger on a plane grounded by fog.
The wedding took place two days later. The groom took the train.
