This is Hattie Ball Holly Mentzel, whose first husband was William Webb Holly, with her father Philip Ball.
Charles Sutphen Britton, Jr. Charles was the son of Jessie Merritt Britton, who was the daughter of Emma Louise Holly Merritt.
Tom Edwards was the grandson of Elizabeth Holly, the sister of William Henry Holly. Tom served in the Civil War.
Rye Beach in the general area of the hotels, like the Beach Hill Hotel where Tom Edwards was the Hotelkeeper.
Alexander Newman Holly, or Newman Alexander -- his name is given both ways in various sources. This photo was taken about the time of his marriage to Annie Guernsey, in 1881.
Holly Brothers
Left to right, William Webb Holly, James Madison Holly, Newman Alexander Holly. Sons of William Henry Holly. Tintype.
Alexander Newman Holly and his three daughters, Winifred, Margaret (Auntie), and Anna (Toddie). Picture taken about 1915, in Port Chester, NY, where they lived.
We are so lucky to have this wonderful photo of the four children of William Webb Holly and Hattie Ball, his second wife. From left to right, the children are Dorothy Amy Holly, Edward Quinlan Holly, Hattie Adelia Holly, and Huyler Irwin Holly. Thanks to Larry Kloess, William's grandson, we have learned about these family members.
Edward was the youngest child of William Webb Holly and Hattie Ball Holly. He died when he was 2. His name is also found as Edwin Quinn Holly.
Holly Girls
This tintype is in a small album from 1870-1875 that may have belonged to Hattie Holly. Few of the photos in the album are labelled, but this one is labelled "M. Mead, H. Holly, E. Holly". The girl on the left is Emma Holly, and I think the middle girl is Harriet (Hattie). The name label before this label says 'May F. Mead', so perhaps it is the same girl. I checked through Port Chester and Greenwich censuses, and I think this could possibly be Mary F. Mead, dau. of Leonard and Francis Mead, originally of Greenwich, moved to Port Chester. She later married William Guthrie, a Railroad Engineer from Scotland. I don't "think" this is a relative, as far as I know now.
Fred Elmore Holly was the son of William Webb Holly and his first wife, Mary E. Finch. He was born in Norwalk and lived in Greenwich as an adult.
Harriette Holly was one of the four children of William Webb Holly and Hattie Ball. She married (first) Lawrence H. Kloess and in 1929 had Lawrence H. Kloess, Jr. Larry has kindly supplied me with photographs from this line. Harriette was the only one of William's 6 children to have a descendant who continued their line. Edward Q. died, and the others had no children.
Hazel Holly, on the right, and a friend, Avilda Jensen. Hazel was the daughter of James Madison Holly, who was a son of William Henry Holly & Margaret McQueen.
Hazel and Belle (Isabelle) were daughters of James Madison Holly, who was a son of William Henry Holly & Margaret McQueen. Hazel is the mother of Bill Schardt.
Huyler Holly, the son of William Webb Holly and Hattie Ball, became a police constable in Port Chester. According to Larry Kloess, he had Badge #1. He and his wife Louise Hartlieb had no children. Larry also says that Louise was the secretary to the CEO of the Lifesaver Company, who married Louise's sister. This is interesting because Auntie, Margaret Holly, who was Huyler's cousin, was a bookkeeper at the Lifesaver Company.
William Webb Holly on the left, and James Madison Holly on the right. Madison was called by his middle name at home, but when he moved to New Jersey, he appears to have been known as James. It appears that he did not remain in much contact with his Connecticut family.
Margaret Holly, daughter of Newman Alexander Holly. Called "Emmy" as a child and young woman by her family, and called "Auntie" by her nieces and nephews.
Margaret Holly was the oldest daughter of Newman Alexander Holly and Annie Guernsey. She never married, and lived all her life in Port Chester, in her father's house, which became hers on his death. She was very talented, musically, and as a seamstress. She worked for the Lifesaver Company as a bookkeeper.
William Henry Holly
This photograph is taken from a print made from a daguerrotype of William Henry Holly. It was taken about 1850.
Mary Adelaide Lyon Wishart, daughter of Thomas M. Lyon and Sarah E. Edwards. Granddaughter of Elizabeth Holly, great-grandaughter of William Henry Holly and Margaret McQueen. Born in Greenwich, CT, Aug. 1872.
John Edwin Merritt was the son of Edwin and Sadie Merritt, and the grandson of Emma Louise Holly Merritt. His sister was Jessie Merritt, who married Charles Britton. They all lived in Port Chester and East Port Chester.
Sarah Webb Holly, the daughter of William Webb and Susannah Weed. Stone in the 1st Congregational Church Cemetery, Old Greenwich, CT. In his research notes, Uncle David noted that he needed to ask Frank Holly (GR8-1115-3) where he got the dates he used on Sally Webb's stone. Since David's notes are mostly from 1949-1955, he is probably referring to Theodore's grandson Frank, Jr. (1889-1975). I checked with the church, and they sent me copies of their plot cards, and they do not record when the stones were placed. We do not know where David, Sally's husband, was buried. He died in 1856, and the Darien church record says "Died in insane hospital." The style of stone for Sally is the same as that for Theodore and his wife Clara. This makes me think that perhaps Frank, Jr. had all these stones put up.
