    EASTON LINEMAN KILLED UP COUNTRY

Wilson Moser Took Hold of Live Wire and Was Hurled to the Ground.

Wilson Moser, of Easton, a lineman in the employ of the Bell Telephone Company, climbed to the top of a telephone pole at Siegfried's yesterday afternoon to put up a new line. Coming in contact with a live wire he received a shock and in the resulting fall me almost instant death without, however, leaving a mark on his body.

At the place where the accident occurred the wires run along the tracks of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Some of the poles are also used by the Lehigh & Northampton Electric Light and Power Company with their power wires.

Moser climbed the pole, which is situated directly between Swan's Hotel and Bachman's store, shortly after 4 o'clock. While engaged in putting up a new wire and handing at a distance of 25 feet from the ground, he took a hold on one of their live wires. Instantly he was hurled into space and fell headlong to the ground. Two of the workmen standing close by drawing the wire on the pole on which Moser had been working, rushed to his assistance. He was picked up unconscious, but still breathing. Before medical aid could arrive Moser passed away.3

  • Research Note*: Note for further research:

Schmidt, Lewis G. A Civil War History of the 47th Regiment of Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, Allentown, 1986. Also Civil War journal, 1863-65, of William Henry Eagle, Harrisburg, surgeon, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, in Manuscript Group 6 at the PA State Archives. (Covers 14 Jul 1863 - 15 Jul 1865).
  • Name Variation: Henry Dwight Flint was generally known as Dwight.
  • Birth*: Henry was born on 27 September 1845.1
  • Milit-Beg*: Henry Dwight Flint began military service on 13 February 1865 at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, as a private in the Civil War. His Civil War Veterans' Record Card in the Pennsylvania State Archives says: Age at enrollment - 19, Complexion - Dark, Height - 5' 4 1/2", Eyes - Gray, Hiar - Dark. Occupation - Laborer, Residence Wyoming County.

The regiment had been organized in 1861 and at the end of 1864 was at Camp Russell, near Winchester, Virginia, until December 20, 1864, and at Camp Fairview, Charlestown, and on outpost duty in West Virginia until April, 1865. They moved to Washington. D.C., April 19-21, 1865 with a Grand Review May 23-24. The regiment moved to Savannah, Ga., May 31-June 4, and to Charleston, S.C., June 17.They had duty at Charleston and other points in South Carolina until December. Mustered out December 25, 1865. (http://www.civilwararchive.com/Unreghst/unpainf2.htm#47th).2
  • Milit-End*: He ended military service on 25 December 1865; The dates are confusing. The 1890 Veterans' Schedules shows his discharge date as 10 June 1886, but shows 10 months and 28 days of service, and the Regiment mustered out in Dec 1865, which would be about 10 months. It is also odd that Bates, Samuel P. History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 , Harrisburg, 1868-1871, available online at the Making of America University of Michigan website, shows Company H recruited at Newberry, Perry County.2
  • Newspaper Item*: The an unknown date edition of the Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania,
reported that "H. Dwight Flint married Lizzie Lehman 24 Mar 1874, both of Easton."3
  • Death*: Henry died on 10 June 1909, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, at age 63.4
  • Obituary*: 11 June 1909 Obituary: Dwight H. Mr. Flint was a native of Wyoming county, N.Y. He was born September 27, 1845. During the Civil war he served as a member of Company H, Forty-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. At the close of the was he came to Easton and remained a resident of this place thereafter.
