    Entertained by his Friends
A Dinner to Willis Holly, Mayor Grant's New Secretary.
Some friends of Willis Holly entertained him at dinner last night at the Fellowcraft Club. Most of them were newspaper men, who have known and worked with Mr. Holly during the twenty years he passed on the press of this city.

It was doubtful whether the note of gladness for Mr. Holly's translation from the staff of the Sun to the post of Secretary to Mayor Grant, or that of sorrow for his departure from newspaper life, was the more earnestly dwelt on by the speakers.

But it was certain that every one present was sure that a man who had done all kinds of journalistic work without making an enemy would prove himself a thorough diplomat in the Mayor's office, and as good a public officer as he has been a faithful reporter.

The friends of Mr. Holly who entertained him were: Chester S. Lord, managing editor of the Sun, and Daniel Kellogg, city editor; Arthur Brisbane, managing editor of the Evening Sun; Edward G. Riggs, Julian Ralph, John R. Sever, A.B. Paddock and W. L. Ormsby, of the Sun; William McMurtrie Speer, ex-Judge Leicester Holme, William J.K. Kenny, Stephen Herbert of the Herald, Dr. Charles J. Perry, Richard Farrelly of the World, Hugh Hastings of the Times, and Lieut. Robert Holly.2
  • Newspaper Item*: According to the 4 February 1894 edition of the New York Times, New York City, New York, New York,
    Marriage of Willis Holly
The Mayor's Secretary Wedded to Margaret Montgomery
Willis Holly, Mayor Gilroy's secretary, was married yesterday afternoon to Margaret Montgomery, daughter of James P. Young of Philadelphia. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. George C. Nixon of the First Presbyterian Church of Tremont, an old friend of Mr. Holly, at the New Netherland Hotel. Only members of the two families and one or two guests were present. The party included Mayor Gilroy, Mr. and Mrs. James P. Young of Philadelphia, father and mother of the bride; Henry W. Holly, father of the bridegroom; Robert T. Holly and wife, Miss Lillian and Miss Ellen Holly, H. W. Holly, Jr., Mrs. A. H. Brockway, and Robert O. Brockway,

Yesterday was the bride's twenty-seventh birthday. Her father is a member of the Alexander Young Distilling Company of Philadelphia. When less than seventeen years of age the bride was married to James Nickerson, a Philadelphia lawyer. She was prominent in society there, and won great success in amateur theatricals. Her marriage with Mr. Nickerson did not prove to ba a happy one, and she obtained a separation. She then went upon the stage as an actress. This step was not approved of by her father, but he did not actively oppose it, because he thought that she would soon give it up. She played with success in "Shenandoah," and with the Minnie Palmer and the "Great Metropolis" companies. Her last engagement was with Cora Tanner. Two years ago she retired from the stage, and in September, 1892, her husband having withdrawn his opposition, a divorce was granted to her in a Philadelphia court.

Mr. Holly's first wife died about two years and a half ago.

The bride wore a traveling dress of green whip cord. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Holly started on a wedding journey, which will last two or three weeks, and during which New-Orleans and San Francisco will be visited. Upon their return Mr. and Mrs. Holly will take up their residence in this city.2

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Holly Had Great Luck on Their Wedding Trip.
Here is a story about a wedding journey that was attended with great good luck. Willis Holly, Mayor Gilroy's private secretary and chief clerk, and his bride left this city Feb. 3, the day of their marriage, and in the course of their journey they had many narrow escapes from accidents, train robbers, landslides, and snow blockades. They missed some of them by unexpected changes in their plans, but them missed them all, and Mr. Holly's friends have been congratulating him on his good fortune.

Mr. Holly was talking yesterday to a few friends about the good luck that Mrs. Holly and himself had on their journey.

"Good luck attended us all the way," he said. "While crossing Texas there was a train robbery committed just before our train passed a junction, at a point on a branch road just above the junction. The robbers had pulled up a section of the track. This was discovered by a trainman, who ran back to signal the train that was coming along the branch road, and the robbers shot him. The train was wrecked, and when our train came along we heard threats of lynching.
"We had figured on leaving Los Angeles for San Francisco on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 10:40 P.M. but by a piece of rare good luck we secured accommodations on the train leaving their on the Wednesday before. The train that we had expected to take on Thursday night was robbed at Roscoe, and the engineer was shot, and the express car was blown up.
"On Feb. 19 we started on a day's visit to Santa Cruz from San Francisco. There was a driving rainstorm in progress, and I heard the trainmen talking about the probability of landslides on that narrow-gauge mountain road. We got to Santa Cruz all right. The train that came over the road after us was blocked by landslides behind and in front of it. We had intended to go back to San Francisco that day and take the night train for Ogden. The storm prevented us from doing so comfortably, so we took it easy and started from San Francisco Wednesday night. Well, the train that we had intended to take Monday night got caught in the snow drifts and only arrived in Ogden Friday morning at the same time that ours did. We were only an hour or so late. That was pretty good luck, wasn't it?"2
