Plot owner, Mrs. Marie S. Hartlieb. Stone and metal plaque "Policemen's Benevolent Association of Westchester County, Inc., PTL. Huyler Holly, Port Chester PD.5
  • Anecdote, Family*: Larry Kloess, Jr., remembers that Huyler "finished Port Chester High School and met Louise Hartlieb while he worked in her father's business called Hartlieb's Meat Market in Port Chester. Aunt Louise's sister was married to the president and CEO of Lifesavers, Inc., a candy company in Port Chester. Aunt Louise was his executive secretary for many years. Uncle Huyler joined the Port Chester Police Department and spent a career there and badge #1 upon retirement. He was a big man whom I was afraid of as a young child. He was a no nonsense tough type of guy. He would wear his sungoggles as a motorcycle officer in his early days. He set records pulling people over for speeding or reckless driving. He would hide out in bushes waiting for speedsters. He never gave warnings. His reputation was that he would arrest his own mother for traffic violations. I grew fonder of him in later years. He could cook great Italian meals. He and Louise lived in a pretty house that they built out from Port Chester. They lived long lives together without children. He died of cancer in the late 60s."3

James McQueen

M, b. between 1793 and 1796
James McQueen|b. bt 1793 - 1796|p45.htm#i1343|Donald McQueen||p57.htm#i1685|Janet McPhail|b. 1766|p57.htm#i1686|||||||||||||
  • Research Note*: We have no documentation that Donald and Janet were James' parents. I am entering them in that capacity here because it is the scenario I am working on at this time. For a while I focused on James McQueen and Anne McDonald, who had a James b. 21 Aug 1794, along with Donald, Anne, William, Margaret and Jane, in Nairn. However, now that we seem to have the full list of James and Elizabeth's children, the second daughter is Janet, and the first son is Donald. So far I have only found two children of Donald and Janet in the OPR's, Donald and Anne.
  • Birth*: James was born between 1793 and 1796, Scotland.1
  • He was the son of Donald McQueen and Janet McPhail.
  • Marriage*: James married Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of David Mitchell and Margaret Cumming, on 7 June 1817, Ardclach, Nairn, Scotland. OPR reads, "June 7th Then were contracted in order to marriage James Macqueen and Elizabeth Mitchell both in this parish.2
  • Note*: "McQueen & Baxter: James McQueen sp.wright, in Burgh-head & Margaret Baxter, Spinster, in Rosiles, were married on banns, 12th April 1836." Is this marriage of our James? Had Elizabeth Mitchell died and he remarried? We have not found a death of Elizabeth Mitchell but neither do we see any further mention of her. on 12 April 1836 at Duffus Parish, Moray, Scotland.3

  • Census*: James appeared on the census of 1840 at Ward 15, New York, New York, New York. This James McQueen does not appear in 1830. This may be some totally unrelated James McQueen, but I am entering it in order to keep my research organized. 1 boy under 5, 2 males 20-29, 1 male 30-39, one girl under 5, one female 20-29, one female 40-49. This does not match with the family that we conjecture may have come in 1836, because the ship passenger list shows David and James, who were born in 1826 and 1829, and shows James, Sr. as 40 and Margaret as 43. Even if James had been married at age 17, he would have been 40 by this time.4
  • Census: James appeared on the census of 30 July 1850 at Ward 9, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. This census record is entered just in case it turns out to be relevant, but this may be an unrelated James. He is show as age 60, Cartman, b. Scotland, with Margaret McQueen, age 52, b. Scotland. There is no McQueen in Brooklyn in 1860.5

  • Birth*: Elizabeth was born circa 1798, Scotland. The parish records do not show an Eliza born to David and Margaret. This is pure speculation on my part, based on the names on the sampler, and other factors.
  • She was the daughter of David Mitchell and Margaret Cumming.
  • Marriage*: Elizabeth married James McQueen, son of Donald McQueen and Janet McPhail, on 7 June 1817, Ardclach, Nairn, Scotland. OPR reads, "June 7th Then were contracted in order to marriage James Macqueen and Elizabeth Mitchell both in this parish.1
  • Married Name: As of 7 June 1817,her married name was McQueen.
  • Death*: Elizabeth died between 1831 and 1836?, Scotland. This is conjecture based on the appearance of Elizabeth at the birth of her son David in Elgin in 1826, and the passenger list of James, David, James aged 5, and Margaret in 1836.

David Mitchell

M
  • Research Note*: If they followed the naming convention, we would expect David's parents to be named George Mitchell and Elizabeth, and we would expect Margaret's parents to be named Janet and James Cumming.
  • Birth: David was born in 1771, Scotland. 1841 Census states born outside Nairn County.1
  • Marriage*: David married Margaret Cumming on 25 January 1793, EdinKillie, Moray, Scotland.2
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 1800, David was affiliated with Ardclach Church, Ardclach, Nairnshire, Scotland,as reflected in the parish records. According to Stuart Farrell's 1997 survey of the church memorials, "the church at Ardclach is situated at the foot of a glade next to the River Findhorn. It has served as the parish church for over 200 years. Inhumations have taken place here from its earliert beginnings and continue to the present day.

The First Statistical Account records that Ardclach comes from the gaelic meaning 'stony high ground'. In 1618 the parish was unted with the nearby parish of Edenkillie (now in Moray) and was registered in its own right by the Kirk Session upon the 8th October 1648.

The present church at Ardclach was built in 1765 (by Andrew McAndrew) replacing an earlier church of 1626. Reconstructed in 1839 at a cost of £500 (by George Dunbar and John Wilson) and renovated in 1892 (by Alexander Reid). The church of 1830 had seating for 686. The furnishings of the church have been transferred to the present parish church, which was formerly Ardclach Free Church. At present [i.e, 1997] the church is disused and its future uncertain. The church is T-shaped in plan, built of yellow sandstone rubble with a slate roof."3
  • Census*: David appeared on the census of 1841 at Fornighty, Ardclach, Nairn, Scotland, as age 70, Blacksmith, head of household with David, 30 (which in 1841 was rounded down to nearest 5 years if between 15 and 65), Blacksmith, Jane 30, Janet 8, Jane 6, William 5, David 2, Mary 6 months, Margaret McGillevray, 15 F.S. (Female Servant), Isabella McGillevray, 12, F.S., all born in Nairn County except David Sr. See photos of Fornighty area with David's Church Affiliation entry.1
