  • Birth*: Abraham was born on 12 January 1732/33, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.2
  • He was the son of Elisha Holly Jr. and Rebecca Bishop.
  • Marriage*: Abraham married Mary Webb, daughter of John Webb and Mary Holmes, on 12 January 1758.3
  • Residence*: As early as in 1765 Abraham Holly lived at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, based on a land record regarding the sale of a right of way to the town for construction of a highway to the Stanwich Meeting House.
  • (Witness) Probate Record: Abraham Holly was listed in the probate record of Silas Holly on 6 July 1771 at Stamford Probate Court, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. See Silas Holly for details.4
  • (Witness) Probate Record: Abraham Holly was listed in the probate record of Lois Todd on 12 May 1772 at Stamford Probate Court, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. See Lois Todd for details.4
  • Census*: Abraham appeared on the census of 1790 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, as 2 males over 16 (Elnathan & ?), 1 male under 16 (Jared), 5 females (wife Mary, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, Abby, Chloe). Neighbors Billy Scofield, Stephen Holly (2/3/3) (son), Stephen Holly Jr. (1/1/3)(nephew), Jonathan, Jesse, Joseph & Noah Waring, Jocob & William White, Ebenezer, Nathaniel & Benjamin Webb.5
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 25 May 1796, Abraham was affiliated with Stanwich Congregational Church, Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut,"Record of such as were found in Covenant and Full Communion when Platt Buffett commenced his pastorship over the Church in Stanwich:" and on the first page, "Abraham Holly, and wife of Abraham Holly." They are both marked with # after their names, meaning "Those marked thus # died in good standing in the church."6
  • Census: Abraham appeared on the census of 1800 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as one male 10-15 years (?), one male 16-25 (possibly Jared, who did not marry until 1802 and would be 25 here), one male 45 and up (Abraham, Sr., age 67). Two females ages 16-25 (Abby and Chloe) and two females 45 and up: Mary Webb and ?7
  • Census: Abraham appeared on the census of 1810 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as as 1 male 10-15 years old, 2 males 16 - 25, and 2 males 45 and up. One female age 10-15, one female 16-25, and 2 females 45 and up. I don't know who the male 10-15 is, although Abraham could have had another son, say, 1795, and there is an Abraham of that age in Montgomery and Greene Counties I should investigate. The males 16-25 could be Alanson (age 21) and David a few years younger. David married about 1811. The two older males could be Abraham Sr and Jr., ages 77 and 52. Don't know who the female 10-15 is, could there be another sister after Sarah? Female 16-25 could be Sarah, although she was born in 1783 and would have been 27. However, there is some evidence that she was unmarried in 1831, so she could have been living at home, and two years off is not uncommon. The two older women would be Mary Webb Holly, age 70, and probably Bethia Ambler Holly, age 53. Living next door is Jas. Holly, Abraham, Jr's oldest son. Living near them are the familiar Hunting Ridge family and neighbors, Billy Scofield, John Ingersoll, John Sherwood, Joel Waring, the Todds, etc.8
  • Will*: Abraham left a will on 15 November 1815 at Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, I, Abraham Holly of Stamford in Fairfield County & State of Connecticut being now of a sound disposing mind and memory do make this my last will & testament as follows, I give unto my daughters Mary Rebecca & Lucy five hundred & twenty five dollars to be divided among them. • Birth*: Abraham was born on 23 November 1758, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.1
  • He was the son of Abraham Holly and Mary Webb.1
  • Milit-War*: He served in the military in 1776. Edith Wicks, in "Stamford's Soldiers" lists Abraham Holly, Jr. (S-37110): "A private in Capt. Joseph Hoyt's Company, Col. Charles Webb's Regiment, he served from December 1776 for one year. Abraham Holly Jr. was born at Stamford 23 November 1758, the son of Abraham and Mary (Webb) Holly, who were married 12 January 1758. He was alive when his father's will was distributed 4 May 1822. His pension application, dated 26 July 1820, stated he was destitute and unable to work, and that his wife, aged 64 years, was 'from infirmity unable to Labour.2'"
  • Milit-War: He is listed on the rolls of at Capt. David Hoit's Company, John Mead's Regiment, in August 1776 on the Expedition to New York commanded by Lieut. Charles Smith.
  • Marriage*: Abraham married Bethia Ambler, daughter of Deacon Joshua Ambler and Bethia Weed, circa 1778. (The fact that their son Alanson Holly was in possession of Abraham Jr's Hunting Ridge property in 1831 verifies that this is the Abraham who married Bethia.).3
  • Position*: In 1784 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abraham was Highway Master, according to Town Minutes.4
  • Town Meeting*: According to the town meeting minutes of Bedford, Westchester County, New York on 6 April 1784, it was voted that "Richard Sackett, James Trowbridge, Silvenus Reynd, John Banks, Jr....and Abraham Holly be a committee to carry out the resolution as follows: Voted that no persons that have ever been over to the enemy shall come into town to reside. If any have all ready come in they are to be immediately drove out."4
  • Position*: In 1785 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abraham was Highway Master, according to Town Minutes.4
  • Property Bounds*: Abraham's boundary was mentioned in a property transaction 2 May 1785 at Cowdelight, Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abstract of Bill of Sale, from Westchester County Deeds, Liber K, pp. 252-3: "Jacob Miller of Bedford, Westchester, NY, sold to Enos Miller of same place, for £150, New York money, all one piece of land in ... Bedford, in or near that part called Cowdelight, called above, eighty acres ... bounded ... begining at the northeast corner of Abraham Holly's land, by the highway then runing westerly by said Holly's land to a red oak tree, then northerly to a popler tree, then near the same coarse to a black oak tree, then near northeast to a walnut tree, then westerly to a black oak tree, then northeasterly to a butter-nut tree, then easterly to a rock by the first mentioned highway, then southerly by said highway to the place of beginning. Jacob Miller, his mark."

In the book, The Place-Names of Westchester County New York by Richard Lederer, Jr., it says: "Cows Delight, Bedford. Owned by Abraham Miller in 1775, it was the south-east corner of the town."5
  • Church Affiliation*: As of 3 September 1786, Abraham was affiliated with Bedford Congregational Church, Bedford, Westchester, New York, admitted during the ministry of Rev. John Davenport (18 May 1786 - 4 May 1791). List of members admitted on the same day, in addition to his wife:

    Jabez Clark
    Eli Weed
    John Saunders
    Isaiah Hait
    Abigail Scofield
    Milison Owen
    Martha Miller W
    Prudence Scofield
    Lavina Hill
    Lydia Clark
    Polly Barker
    Nancy Barker
    Prudence Stanson

Following the list of members admitted by Rev. Davenport is an undated list entitled "The following is a complete list of the names of the members of the Presbyterian church in Bedford." Neither Abraham, Jr., nor Bethia are listed. Neither are they listed in the next list, dated 1798, at the installation of Rev. Henderson.6,7

  • Position: In 1790 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abraham was Highway Master, according to Town Minutes.4
  • Census*: Abraham appeared on the census of 1790 at Bedford, Westchester, New York, as 1 male 16+, 1 male under 16, 2 females. Nearby names: Elisha Bates, Abijah Harris, Charles Sellock, Reuben Bailey, Benjamin Ambler. This Abraham does not match the family members we expect. We would expect 2 males under 16, James born 1785 and Alanson born 1789. However, they were in Bedford in 1790. No Abraham shows up in any other Bedford census.8
  • Position: In 1791 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York, Abraham was Highway Master, according to Town Minutes.4
  • Note*: Holly's in the Bedford census:
    1790: Abraham, Jesse Holley

    1820: Joney Holley
    1830: John, Jonah, Stephen.

  • Illness*: Abraham was injured with a "bad rupture" per his Pension Application in 1820. in 1800.
  • Census: Abraham appeared on the census of 1800 at Ward 7, New York City, New York, New York, as The only potential Abrahm Holly I can find in 1800 is this one in NYC. Doubful, but possible, so I am recording it so I don't lose it. 2 boys under age 10, 1 boy age 10-15, one man 26-44, one woman 26-44.9
  • Census: Abraham may have appeared on the census of 1810 at Hunting Ridge, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, in the household of his father, Abraham, Sr. See that census listing for details.

  • Pension: Abraham received his last pension payment in March 1825 at Connecticut
His death date is not listed on the payment ledger. It is possible that he was transferred to a different pension agency in a different state at that time, but I have not found another Abraham in another state picking up payments at that time, so it is likely that he died.11
  • Death*: Abraham died between March 1825 and 1830, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He is not listed in the 1830 census, and there are 1831 property transfers by Alanson and Sarah.
