- Father: Richard Smalley Pratt1 b. bt 1815 - 1820, d. a 1849
- Mother: Mary Herrick1 b. 20 Sep 1816, d. c Apr 1898
- Birth*: Seth was born in 1845, Rushford, Allegany County, New York. (1850 census lists Seth's birthplace as Pennsylvania, 1870 lists Ohio, 1880 Penna. So it is possible that MD Pratt assumed he was born in Rushford as the other boys were, but perhaps there was a sojourn in Pennsylvania before moving to Indiana.).1
- He was the son of Richard Smalley Pratt and Mary Herrick.1
- Census: Seth appeared on the census of 10 August 1860 at Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana, as a boarder in the household of John Archer, age 45, a Brickmason, and his family. Seth is age 13, and it says born Penn.2
- Marriage*: Seth married Emma B. Pryor on 15 December 1869.3
- Census*: Seth appeared on the census of 9 June 1870 at 5th Ward, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, as age 25, Dry Goods Merchant, rent $35 per month, born in Ohio, with Emma B., age 22, Keeping House.4
- Census: Seth appeared on the census of 3 June 1880 at Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, as age 34, Real Estate Agent, born in Pennsylvania, father born in Pennsylvania and mother in Maryland. With Emma B., 32, wife. Gertrude, daughter, age 9, Idiotic, and Clara, daughter, age 6, and Osker, son, age 4. Lizzie Williis, House Servant, age 18. It is interesting that Seth's 1860 census says born in PA, as well as this one, and 1870 says Ohio. My understanding was that he was born in Rushford, NY, as were the other two boys. However, it is an interesting coincidence since his grandfather Benjamin was supposed to be from Penna.5

M, b. 1771
- Birth*: Benjamin was born in 1771, Pennsylvania.1,2
- Research Note*: On 1 October 1812 a Benjamin Pratt is listed in the Greensburg, PA "Greensburgh & Indiana Gazette" in the list of letters remaining at the Post Office. Greensburg is about 3/4 of the way from Carlisle to Pittsburgh. Viewed on genealogybank.com.
- Marriage*: Benjamin married Elizabeth Ann (?) circa 1815. This is very doubtful. I am just leaving this in temporarily.1
- Property Record: Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 30 March 1837 at Democrat Township, Carroll County, Indiana, when he purchased 120 acres in two parcels from the Crawfordsville Land Office. The certificates (#26921 and 25866) both say "Benjamin Pratt of Union County, Indiana." We can't be sure that this is the same Benjamin, but very likely it is, because a male of the correct age is in the Carroll County 1840 census. The two parcels are as follows:
1) Aliquot Parts NENE, Section 29, Township 24-N, Range 1-E, Meridian 2nd PM.
2) W 1/2 NW, 28, 24-N, 1-W, 2nd PM.
This property appears to be in northern Democrat Township, on or near the boundary line with Monroe Township.3
- Census*: Benjamin appeared on the census of 1840 at Carroll County, Indiana, as one male 15-20, one male 60-70, one female 15-20, one female 20-30. Is this our Benjamin, or a different one? The age is right, and the location is near where he is found in 1850. Did he go out to Indiana before his son did?4
- Biography*: 1846: According to Mason Delano Pratt, Benjamin "must have been a farmer, for in 1846 he, with his son's family, migrated to Indiana. He purchased a tract of canal lands in Marshall County near Lake Maxinkuckee. The deed issued to him by the State recites that he came from Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, but extensive search has so far failed to find any records of his living there...Sometime during the [Civil] War he moved to Queen Annes County, Maryland, for a deed for the farm, given to William Sturgeon in 1864, was signed by him and his wife." [note by HK: I would be surprised if Benjamin lived through the Civil War. He was 79 in the 1850 census. I think it must be another Benjamin who was in Queen Annes County.]1
- Property Record*: Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 17 May 1849 at Cass County, Indiana, per search of La Porte/Winamac Land Office Entries database on the Indiana Commission of Public Records website, http://www.in.gov/icpr. "The "land office business" in Indiana began in 1801, when public lands in the southeastern corner of the Indiana Territory were put up for sale at Cincinnati. The U.S. Congress subsequently opened land offices at Vincennes in 1804; at Jeffersonville in 1807; in 1819 at Terre Haute (later Crawfordsville) and Brookville (later Indianapolis); and at Ft. Wayne in 1822. An additional land office opened at LaPorte in 1833; six years later, the office was moved to Winamac. The LaPorte- Winamac District embraced all or part of the present counties of Benton, Carroll, Cass, Elkhart, Fulton, Howard, Jasper, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Wabash, and White."
- (Witness) Census: Benjamin Pratt appeared on the census of 24 September 1850 in the household of Mary Herrick at Eel Township, Cass County, Indiana, (See record of Mary Herrick for details.).2
- Newspaper Item*: According to the 29 March 1851 edition of the Logansport Journal, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana,
Married: On the 27th, Benjamin Pratt and Mrs. Mary Steele, both of this place. p.2, col. 6. No idea if this is our Benjamin, he would be 80 years old. - Newspaper Item: According to the 9 April 1851 edition of the Logansport Democratic Pharos, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana,
Married, in this place, on the 27th, Mr. Benjamin Pratt and Mrs. Mary Steele. P.3, c.2. This may or may not be our Benjamin. I see a Mary Steel in Eel Twp, Cass County in the 1850 census. No husband is listed, she is listed first, age 40 and has apparently 6 children ranging from age 23 - 7. If our Benjamin married her, perhaps he wasn't as old as indicated by the 1850 census. - Death*: Benjamin's death date is unknown. Perhaps he died before 1860 because he does not appear with Mary Herrick in the 1860 census. Elaine Goodale Eastman tells of his grandson Henry earning enough to buy a pair of boots at a young age, maybe 11 years old or so, and he "wore them proudly slung about his neck on a five mile tramp to his grandfather's, feeling that they had cost too much to be put upon his feet." That would have been some time around 1851 or so, and Benjamin at that time was living five miles out of Logansport.5
