Jeffrey Felmette
M, d. before 1834
- Biography*: An unknown date : Jeffrey Felmette (Felmeta, Felmet, etc) was a free black resident of Greenwich. In 1784, the Connecticut legislature passed a law freeing all children of slaves born after March 1, 1784, when they reached the age of 25. This age was reduced to 21 in 1797. In the 1790 census, there were 122 blacks in Greenwich, which included 82 slaves in 49 households. There were two households of free blacks, and 30 free blacks living with white families.
In the will of Lucy Husted, who died in 1796, there is a mention of a debt of nine shillings, paid to Jeffry, a Negro man. Christine McKay writes in the "Greenwich History" journal, "Jeffry is quite likely "Jeffrey (black)", one of the two free African Americans appearing in the 1790 census. This is probably Jeffrey Felmetta, the first of a large family of stonemasons to be mentioned in town land records as early as 1786." Later in the article she writes, "The Felmetta family numbered 17 by 1860, including George, James and Prudence, who owned property totaling $1800. Beginning with Jeffrey Felmetta in 1786, there are at least 36 transactions in town land records involving the Felmettas which continue until 1870. In the 1870 census, only Prudence remains in Greenwich. [HK Note: in the 1870 census she is living next door to Seely's daughter Caroline and his grandson Theodore and family.] A decade later, there were none left, although a Robert Felmetta family was living in Stamford. After the Civil War, George Felmetta's daughter, Anjinett, married Robert Pterson, a farm hand whose father and brother would become stone masons like the Felmettas. His parents, William and Emeline Peterson, were members of the First United Methodist Church "colored mission."1 - Death*: Jeffrey died before 1834.
